Another Reno At The Hygge Ranch: The Powder Room

As I'm writing this, it's also the one year anniversary of the last renovation we did at the hygge ranch: the kitchen. Even though in the world of content creation this may seem like a long time in between projects, it was needed time. And to be fair, I did do another project after the kitchen reno - the flex lounge - it just wasn't a reno. I knew we would need a respite before tackling another project, especially this project.

About The Powder Room

We suspect the powder room & launderette were once one space - a laundry room - and over the years the previous (and original) homeowners decided to split it up to make room for a powder room. This is just a theory. We actually have no idea. But moving along...

The launderette, which we renovated last year, is a 5' x 8' space that shares a wall with the 5' x 5' powder room. There's no way we were renovating one without the other, especially with the powder room being the most dated space in our entire home. It was just a question of when. Because they share a wall, I'd been ideating plans for the powder room since designing the launderette. Although I've made some tweaks since then, the design is pretty much exactly as it was. And just like the launderette, hubs and I are planning to DIY the whole thing.

Everything will be changing, except the toilet - although now I'm thinking that should change too. In any case, the plan is to optimize this tiny room. We can't add any square footage, however, we can certainly make it feel like we did.

Switching from a closed vanity to an open style, for example will make that corner of the room visually "less heavy" while also serving the purpose of giving it a more up-to-date modernized look.

We have no plans on moving any plumbing - we're working with what we got and just making it better. This doesn't feel like something we need to bring in our contractor for - change vanity, lighting, mirror, and storage... paint... install new fixtures... put toilet right back where we found it. Easy breezy right?

Admittedly, thinking about the powder room, also has us thinking about the other bathrooms in the house, although those are a long ways away from every being renovated. We can tell they were updated by the previous owners - at least 5 years ago I'd say - whereas the powder room wasn't touched since it was installed. So even though we won't be touching those other bathrooms any time soon, I like to look and get inspired for when we are ready to give em a facelift.

I won't be doing any step-by-step process sharing on IG but you can def follow along for when I do pop up with progress photos & videos in my stories. This is a small space so it also has the potential to be a quick DIY, however, my husband works full time outside of the home & with everything else on our plates, the powder has to be tackled one little bit at a time, especially the most laborious tasks of getting the old fixtures out, removing the old flooring, painting, changing out the lighting, updating the plumbing, tile & wallpaper installation, and then making sure it all comes together in a way thats functional & beautiful.

I am geeked to be partnering up with The Tile Shop & Build with Ferguson once again (they were my partners for the launderette, icymi) so bring this all to life.

While plotting this reno, I've also been grappling on whether to call this a half bath or a powder room - which do you use by the way? - and I've landed on washroom: "a room with washing and toilet facilities" because that's all that's in there anyway lol.

This project shall henceforth be known as The Hygge Ranch Washroom.
