Wait... Is it May already? How are we doing Mother's Day shopping when I was just picking out Christmas tree decorations? I'm in serious denial over how quickly this year is going! Especially since acknowledging Mother's Day would also mean acknowledging that my baby girl is turning 2 (Mother's Day this year lands on her birthday) and I'll be the first to admit that I am just not ready for that kind of reality check!
But to be fair, I've always had a thing about postponing Mother's Day for as long as possible. Let me explain...
I come from a Haitian family and, as is the case with many other cultures, our Mother's Day isn't celebrated at the same time as the US of A. Haitian Mother's Day is celebrated the last Sunday of May, so that easily buys me 2 additional weeks. Yet here we are, mere days before the calendar Mother's Day & I'm almost certain that I'm not alone in not having thought twice about a gift.
Now it's funny that I mentioned my daughter is about to be 2, because it's automatically assumed that Mother's Day gives me all the feels. Nope. No feels here. Mother's Day 2015, I was 2 days past due & extremely miserable because she was a "sunny side up" baby (if you don't know what that means, all you really need to know is that it hurts... A LOT!) Mother's Day 2016, my husband was away on active duty & even though he sent me awesome gifts, it was just baby girl & I. Our Mother's Day consisted of installing her baby gates, since she was officially on the move, and taking my new Bissell deep cleaner for a spin (also, because she was on the move). So here I am, my 3rd "official" Mother's Day & I hardly have any of the feels, much less all of them. And I'm still dragging my feet till the end of the month for everyone else *insert shrug here*
Now if you're a procrastinator like me, for whatever reason, you can pretty much rule out custom gifts. But that doesn't mean you can't still wow your mom/sister/aunt/wife/etc. It's so easy to fall trap to some cliche Mother's Day gifts, but I've always done my best to get sentimental, yet pragmatic gifts. That may be why I'm kind of known within my circle of people of being an awesome gift giver, no matter how late the gift may be.
Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed The World
Why I Love It: Does the title not say it all? We're celebrating women & the strength of a mother, so what better gift than to show her how many other bad ass women have come before her?! And it's pretty enough to show off on her coffee table, bookshelf, or desk.
Umbra Aquala Bamboo Bathtub Caddy
Why I Love It: I don't know about you, but I love a good bath! After having my daughter, I began to love (and appreciate) them even more -- the epitome of "me time" with a good book, some wine, and music in the background. This caddy makes that all possible.
KitchenAid Copper Metallic Series Stand Mixer
Why I Love It: My husband is the chef in our household. No questions ask. But I did grow up with a mom who was ALWAYS baking and so by osmosis, I've inherited the desire to want to bake. I won't be churning out any delicacies any time soon, but I do know I'd love to see this girl propped up in my kitchen! Talk about functional art.
Amazon Echo in White
Why I Love It: I'm a tech geek. That is all. Not enough? Okay then... what makes the Echo awesome is Alexa, and Alexa is the personal assistant every mom wishes she had. Make mom's wishes come true! The white model has a very clean, crisp, and modern look, but it could also seamlessly integrate in just about any decor.
Keurig 2.0 K200 in Sandy Pearl
Why I Love It: Moms run on coffee. This makes coffee happen. Need I say more? No, but I will, because I know not everyone is a coffee drinker. Tea. Hot Chocolate. Hot water for cup-o-noodles. All happening right here folks. And the small footprint of this model is ideal when counter space is at a premium, while the pearl finish is just so dang pretty to look at. More of that functional kitchen art.
Thank You Mom
Why I Love It: Full of quotes about motherhood and pretty florals, it's really the best Mother's Day card you'll ever give. She can prop it up & show it off alongside her Bad Girls Throughout History book.
Click & Grow Indoor Smart Fresh Herb Garden Kit
Why I Love It: Low maintenance, year round, indoor gardening. It's known that introducing greens & plant life infuse a sense of life and really brings the outdoors in. Plus, in my head, most moms (aka me projecting my feelings out into the universe) secretly wish they had a green thumb. Wish granted. You're welcome!
Mother Embrace Limited Edition Art
Why I Love It: Admittedly, I am no art connoisseur, however, I think we can all agree that what makes art "art" is the beauty that can be found in the piece; and there is a universal beauty that is undeniable in this black & white print. This'll definitely be a conversation piece no matter where mom hangs it. And if she really likes you, she'll even tell people you painted it for her.
Gold 5pc Izon Flatware Set
Why I Love It: By a show of hands, whose mom doesn't just have the dining room table set ALL YEAR ROUND? Add some glam to mom's tablescaping with this GORGEOUS set. Gold is back and in a big way!
Scented Candle in Glass Holder
Why I Love It: A few things are happening here and I'm here for all of it -- candles are awesome, the printed texts are really peaceful, and then there's the gold. Mom can light a candle on her night table or by her bath on the awesome caddy you bought her. Either way, you really can't go wrong here!
