LG Signature Laundry Experience

Once upon a time there was a girl that got her dream washer and dryer. And she lived happily ever after. The end. That's the story. And the girl... is me!

Now let's get into a bit more detail because clearly not much of a story...

A few weeks ago I shared on Instagram our first appliance purchase — not just as homeowners, but ever...in life!

That's the thing about renting, right? In most instances you don't have to worry about and/or have a choice in appliances. You move in and they're already there. Having always had a washer & dryer in all my apartments, I've always appreciated having that luxury in-house but never really gave the type of washer or dryer I had any consideration.

Front load vs. top load.

Side-by-side vs. stackable.

I didn't care because I didn't have a say; I was simply happy to have em. Even the most frustrating laundry setups were a blessing, so getting a chance to choose my own washer & dryer was completely mind blowing.

I've said this before, but in case you missed it... the house we bought was basically move in ready in that it was fully livable, with all of the kitchen appliances. Even though the washer & dryer were in the listing photos, right after placing our offer we were told the washer & dryer were the only appliances that weren't staying — here's a similar washer & dryer to theirs. This didn't bother us for a few reasons:

  1. we received a credit (towards our closing costs) to make up for the appliances

  1. the set they had was overwhelmingly massive in the space... like at the door massive

While we were fine with them taking what were clearly brand new appliances, this left us needing a washer & dryer. We produce a lot of laundry and if as renters we had in house laundry, I'll be damned if we weren't going to have any as a homeowners.

Tip: since the previous homeowners probably had to open the doorway to remove their appliances, in hindsight, we could have asked them to leave it open and/or get a credit for repairs.

For the first time — for both of us — we were appliance shopping... not window shopping, but shopping shopping.

We had to consider things like the physical size (our laundry room is c. 40 sq. ft.), the cubic size, the features, and so many other trivial things that never occurred to us — like are we top load or front load people... I don't know!

After browsing brick & mortar stores, just to see what was out there, I did what I do best — I started online shopping. Build with Ferguson offers a large catalog of laundry room appliances, from a number of brands. Thankfully, having already moved in, we had a short list of "must-haves" for the appliances —

  1. relatively small footprint for the small laundry room, without sacrificing too much cubic size

  2. sleek design, including a black stainless steel finish, because design matters

  3. advanced technology features like steam drying and sanitizing cycles

  4. energy efficient, especially since we'd be getting an electric (not gas) dryer

  5. available immediately or sooner because we can comfortably go about 4 weeks without doing laundry before things start to get weird

We decided on the LG Signature laundry appliances because they checked off all of our prerequisites, including availability.

Fun fact: COVID-19 led to unprecedented demand for appliances, which in turn led to high delay times for everything from refrigerators to — you guessed it — washer & dryers. Surprisingly the LG Signature laundry appliances we chose — in the black stainless steel of course — were available in a relatively short amount of time. Relatively... as in less than 7 weeks compared to some other units.

As the primary laundry doer (by choice), one of the biggest draws to the LG Signature collection was the compatibility with LG's pedestal washer & storage drawer. We've never had a laundry room with a sink — to be honest, our previous laundry rooms were more like laundry closets — but even now with a dedicated room, we still didn't have a sink. I've always thought having a sink would be super dope for smaller washes, quick soaking, and/or more delicate hand washing. The pedestal washer is the next best thing for literally all 3 of these reasons!

Not having the appliances was also a blessing in disguise in that the laundry room would be empty for quite some time. If you were here for my One Room Challenge earlier last month, you'll remember that during the second week I talked about why my design was all about the "must be nice" spaces, including the laundry room.

Spoiler: this is said laundry room! The empty laundry room provided a great opportunity to actually design it ourselves.

Keeping the design in mind, I partnered with Build with Ferguson to choose the LG Signature laundry appliances that would best suit our lifestyle — the 30 Inch Wide 5.8 Cu. Ft. Energy Star Rated Front Load Washer with TurboWash and SmartThinQ, 29 Inch Wide 9.0 Cu. Ft. Electric Dryer with TurboSteam and SmartThinQ Technology, 29 Inch Wide 1.0 Cu. Ft. Pedestal Washer with Twin Wash Capability and Smart Diagnosis, and 29 Inch Wide Pedestal Storage Drawer for Washers and Dryers.

It took everything in me to not also get the Steam Cleaner Care System with TrueSteam but it would completely overpower the room. If we had just a tad bit more square footage though... it would've totally made the cut.

As of writing this post we finally unboxed the appliances — although we couldn't help opening them much earlier to see them, at least partially — as we begin working on the laundry room. In real time, the old flooring has been pulled up (there's a funny story there... but that's for later) and replaced, paint and lighting are all complete, and all the major upgrades are done. It's not often I let appliances drive a design but that was 100% the case here — I mean they're gorgeous pieces of machinery!

Thankfully we were still in the "safe zone" of how long it's been since we last did laundry (tip: when you're moving, do ALL your laundry at the old place just in case!) so that gave us time to get the laundry room design completed before needing to move the appliances in and get em all hooked up.

When we bought the house, we didn't anticipate having to buy any appliances, but I am low key glad this worked out in the way that it did; and as someone who actually loves and enjoys laundry, I am stoked to have these babies hooked up & ret to go!
