Believe it or not, I don't follow many of the COTY (color of the year) announcements that are made. P.S. if you wanna hang out with someone who does, @younghouselove's C.O.T.Y. highlight is a fun treasure trove of annual predictions. As for me, I have only ever paid a handful of these selections any mind, be it in my own personal usage or here on the blog... and the Pantone 2023 Color of the Year is one of the few that's caught my attention.
Meet Viva Magenta.
Viva Magenta is described as a "hybrid" color - "a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength."

From this description, I can completely see how this would be apropos going into 2023. It continues...

When I think about this past year - past couple of years actually - I think we could all use bit more of all of the above. I know I could. Viva Magenta is a visually energetic color. It's bold color from a family of hues to play with, making it an exciting color to experiment with in home decor & fashion.

Color theory tells us that red is associated with enthusiasm, passion, and power, while blue is associated with loyalty & feelings of peace. A hybrid of reds & blues, Viva Magenta is a color that illustrates "universal harmony" as it takes on the attributes of its parent hues. With that, it reveals many of the feelings & experiences we're all probably looking forward to in the new year.
Viva Magenta is a disruptor, however, I would argue that it's exactly the kind of disruption we need.
For the better part of the past decade - which sounds wld to even say! - I think we've all experienced quite a bit of turbulence... I know I have. That turbulence has, in many ways, now become an unhealthy norm. Viva Magenta represents an optimistic disruptor, breaking away from the neutrality of normalcy.
This is a color that, on its own, a lot of people would shy away from in decorating & wardrobing. It's often the case that the bolder the color, the more hesitant people are to introduce it into their design repertoire, especially when it comes to home decor & furnishings. Viva Magenta is truly a statement color - can punch up a neutral backdrop or be the star of the entire show. We're accustomed to seeing it in entertainment & on runways, and in the homes of self professed maximalists & color lovers. Going into the new year, Viva Magenta is a color that I think everyone will be incorporating into their lifestyle in some capacity from soft line decor items to fashion accessories to marquee pieces like outerwear & sofas.
Personally, I find myself surprisingly captivated by Viva Magenta and low key am looking forward to incorporating more of it into my life. At present, I own maybe three items that are in the Viva Magenta color family - a top, a pant, and a pair of sneakers... and every time I wear the top, without fail, at least one person tells me how great the color looks on me. Guess it's time I listen!
