One Room Challenge Week 6: Removable Wallpaper Installation

This post is in partnership with Tempaper because I love em & know you’ll love em too!

It should come as a surprise to no one that this project involves removable wallpaper - this'll be my second removable wallpaper project here at #thehyggeranch and my 4th wallpaper project in the 6 years since we've been in Washington.

When planning this space, I knew we didn't want to repaint because, well, don't feel like it. ICYMI... when we flipped this room with the media room, we painted it the same color as the kitchen, Sherwin Williams Fortitude. I decided that no matter the direction this room took, this color choice would work...

a. it's a cool gray color to encourage calm focus

b. it's complements the surrounding colors in the laundry & media rooms

c. it's light enough to be painted over if I changed my mind

Choosing this neutral base also meant that I could create other opportunities for some razzle dazzle in the space.

This space has 4 walls —

  1. the shared garage wall, which also extends up the stairs to the hallway

  2. the wall right of the stairs

  3. the shared media room wall

  4. the wall of the laundry room & half bath

I ruled out wallpapering the wall that's shared with the garage because I had no desire to continue the wallpaper up the stairs, and there would be no "clean" break in where the wallpaper stops & the wall continues. I also knew I didn't want to wallpaper the entire space because I really didn't feel like it. Most of the walls would have stuff all over them anyways - the mini's work, our whiteboards, etc.

I am not new to installing wallpaper and thankfully this isn't the worst wall - not too many outlets or openings... mostly straight walls - so this would also be a low lift upgrade.

I chose Tempaper's Coffee Beans design in the Sienna color way

When choosing a design, I had a general sense of the palette, which brought me to the Coffee Beans. With this being a space for getting all kids of work done - and where I'd be very caffeinated - it felt kinda kismet that this is would be the design I choose. I got samples of both color ways - Sienna & Stone Grey - and chose the former. Stone Grey was too muted so up against the paint, it would almost camouflage, whereas Sienna would add visual interest & warmth without competing with the other colorful pieces in the space.

One question I have gotten asked pretty often since buying a home is why I still use removable wallpaper. My answer: why not? I've already talked about the need for flexibility in this space... I reserve the right to change my 6 weeks... 6 months... 6 years from now. Removable wallpaper affords me that flexibility.

The wallpaper is that last of the "major"installations in this space. From here on, it's all about finishing touches... a lot of finishing touches... but near the finish nonetheless.
