Shop With Me: Gardening 101

Never have I ever had a green thumb. A few years back I kept an aloe alive in out NYC student apartment, but that's about as far as my gardening experience goes. Now, however, with our new home, I get the chance to learn everything about everything who it comes to gardening... and boy is there a lot to learn.

When we bought the house, we were blessed with a magnificent yard that was clearly loved. I shared all my outdoor design musings, which is all about furnishings & decor, but not the landscape. Since the first time I saw the yard, I knew I'd have my work cut out for me. Despite the anticipated work, I found myself excited to learn and to grow... pun intended. From being able to identify the plants in our yard to learning how to care for them, it's been a crash course in landscaping. The best part about learning something new — shopping!

Why Am I Shopping?

The previous homeowners took amazing care of their yard — they clearly loved their landscaping. We not only have to learn how to continue the upkeep, we need the tools to do so. After learning about what we have, I proceeded to learn about what we need... or just what I'd like to have.

What's In My Gardening Shopping Cart?

I am shopping for information, tools, and accessories. I've been looking into different gardening books that'll serve as a resource and guide as I figure this all out, in addition to the proper gardening tools -- for us and the mini -- to make sure we properly care for our landscape. I've already begun shopping some of these items, since recently reaching out to our local nursery for help identifying all of our plants.

Tip: If you’re like me and not so sure about the plants in your care, find your local extension office and speak with a master gardener, or reach out to your favorite local nursery.

Knowing exactly what we have in our yard has been a huge relief because, now, I'm not shopping haphazardly. I know what I need, and why I need it.
