Tis The Season: 5 Holiday Themes To Get You In The Holiday Spirit

It’s the most wonderful time of the year — you’re decking the halls, you’re making your lists and checking em twice, and you’re doing all the things to make up for all the times you were maybe not so nice ;-) This time of year has become synonymous with turning our homes topsy turvy with tinsel & trees & all the things for a very merry season. And while I, personally, won’t be doing any decorating this year — another chat for another day — I still love window shopping & digitally perusing all of the festive decor for the season.

Back in my NYC days, as much as I would abhor being in any department store during the holidays, I could not resist going into the Macy’s Herald Square Christmas Shop because the inspiration would be oozing from every corner of the pop up! Even with all the tourists in my way, I would lost (sometimes literally) in browsing the ornaments & figurines, and daydream about the day I’d have a home of my own to deck out… says the girl who’s chosen to skip the decorating this year lol.

As the saying goes, those who cannot do, create mood boards lol or something like that. Because I’m still very obsessed with browsing holiday decor, I have a variety of holiday inspired lists across my Amazon Storefront — P.S. did you know I have an Amazon storefront? Because I do… and it’s pretty dope if I do say so myself. Check it out & be sure to hit follow while you’re there so you always know when I’m updating my shopping finds. Now back to these holiday lists…

I have curated holiday lists for everything you may need to survive the shopping overwhelm of the season — prepping, organizing, hosting, gifting, and of course… decorating! Because for some people, the idea of decorating can seem overwhelming — where to start, what to buy — I’m sharing 5 themes & color stories to get your inspired with just enough time to spare to get your decor up while enjoying your Thanksgiving leftovers… because round these parts, we decorate AFTER Thanksgiving, and never before.

Here are five holiday themes that you can shop from — mixing & matching is encouraged by the way — to get your in the holiday spirit this year…

Holiday Edit: Traditional Colors

This color story is all about your reds, your greens, and your plaids. This traditional color combo is nostalgic yet elevated, with options that include metallic pops & cozy textures.

Traditional, classic color stories don’t have to be basic or boring. While being inspired by the tried & true combination of red, white, green, and sometimes even gold, you can still add your personal touches and additional inspirations to make it all your own.

Holiday Edit: Black White Gold

This elegant color combo for the season is glamourous & sophisticated, for a look that is sure to wow.

If you saw my 2021 holiday plan then this color story combination may feel familiar. Adding any kind of metal — and y’all know I love incorporating metals! — can elevate any theme or color story. Be it copper, bronze, nickel, or in this case, gold, by introducing metal you add more visual interest & depth, and sophistication to your concept. Take a black & white theme from monochromatic to dramatic… like wearing jewelry with your tuxedo.

Holiday Edit: Winter Wonderland

White on white on white is a classic color theme for the season — pure wonder and a love letter to the winter season.

When creating a monochromatic color scheme, you get the benefit of simplicity, allowing other design elements in the space to truly pop! It’s also an opportunity to play with a variety of hues — cool & warm whites that complement one another — in addition to introducing textures & unexpected elements to enhance the palette.

Holiday Edit: Pretty In Pink

This unexpected color theme for the season is whimsical yet chic, with a balance of fun sophistication for the season.

Two years ago we introduced a new tree to our holiday planning — a 7' pre-lit pink pencil tree for the mini — and it gave me a new fond appreciation for a color infused holiday theme. If you’ve been around for a while, then you know I’ve been a pretty big advocate for pink being considered a neutral, and not just a passing trend. Even if you’re not ready to introduce this whimsical & expected color into your daily decor, bringing it into your holiday season could totally be a fun way to shake up your season.

Tis the season to get cozy with a hygge inspired holiday theme!

It should come as no surprise to any of you that I would have a hygge inspired holiday edit. For the past 6 years, I have been shouting to anyone who’ll listen how the Danish concept of hygge runs parallel with the winter holiday season, evoking feelings of warmth, coziness, and gratitude. This can easily be depicted in the decor & styling of the season through layers of lighting, texture, and neutrals.

In some iteration or another, these are all styling themes & color stories that I’ve tried in my own home over the years. And trust me — I know there a myriad of themes that can be dabbled with for the holiday season. This is in no way intended to be an exhaustive source of inspiration. Holiday decorating — decorating in general — should be personal to you… reflective of your style/mood/vibe. These 5 themes are to get you inspired… to start thinking about the style/mood/vibe you’re going for this year… and to make your shopping just a touch easier than it otherwise might’ve been.

Even though this year I’m choosing to sit out the decorating rat race — my husband is putting up my daughter’s tree though — I still get a lot of joy seeing all the options available for creating truly amazing & bespoke holidayscapes… and isn’t that what this season is all about? My joy this year will be in the seeing, not the doing, and I love that for me. That said… I can’t wait to see what you do!
